Programming note: Handpicked didn’t change much since day 1. More or less jobs, (funding) news, links, meme with a lot of stuff in between. I would love you to help me improve how I deliver the content (order of sections and structure). It will take 3 minutes and help improve your future experience. Thank you so much. 🙏
I am also introducing something fresh in Snippers, a coffee date. ☕️

☕️ Coffee with Amir Azimi from Pursuit
This is a new place—for people who deserve your attention. We start with Amir. He curates a fantastic newsletter you should subscribe to, and these are his three recommendations for you:
The hidden cost of success (read) — One of the most powerful questions I use before committing to a new project or opportunity is: Do I want the successful version of this? What does the day-to-day reality of success look like?
Shadows of your superpowers (listen) — Whether you're a senior leader or an individual contributor, it is important to recognize the shadows of your superpowers and listen to contradictory feedback to rebuild the tools you need to succeed.
Everything is practice (read) — Practicing and forgetting are all part of the process of being human, and we don't need to prove anything to anyone. You can just be you, now.

🏖️ When people ask about my holiday plans, I reply: “Berlin is the best in the summer, so I am staying here.” And there is a rap song about it, Icke & Er - Keen Hawaii. Good if you understand German.
📣 Did you know who is the voice in the U-Bahn? (🇩🇪, Instagram) Me neither. It’s Philippa Jarke. It took her over 100 hours for 4500+ different recordings.
♻️ To learn more about separating trash in Germany and the related benefits, read this thread on r/germany. Related 15min video, The recycling myth: What actually happens to our plastic. 38kg of plastic per person, huh.
🇩🇪 🤒 Germany, AGAIN the sick man of Europe? I previously published an article from Politico, and now also Economist is saying Germany needs to get the sh*t together fast. Pair it with this:
🤦🏻♂️ Whenever someone tells you to touch your hand for steak doneness, tell them lol, bro/sis, get the f*ck out or something nicer. If you don’t believe me, check here. (comment on Reddit)
🏛️ The legendary ICC Berlin will be opened to everyone free of charge on 8th,9th and 10th of September. “The gigantic building, Germany's most important congress centre until 2014, is reminiscent of a spaceship with its more than 300-metre-long aluminium façade.” Tickets. I will be there on the 8th a 19.00. Let me know if you join.
💸 Here is an opinion about real estate prices in Berlin: Nick Mulder from Hypofriend says they will go up 3-4% annually. If true, a purchase is a no-brainer. But read the comments before you jump to conclusions. Meanwhile, mortgage rates hit 7.09%, in the US, the highest in over 20 years. Also related: From Jan-Jun 2023, Berlin saw 8,132 approved residential permits, a 1.7% drop from last year. 91% are in new buildings. (St. BB)
🍕“Which is healthier: a pizza made from scratch or one made from the same basic ingredients, with the same number of calories, pulled out of a box in the freezer?” The Economist on ultra-processed food. Not conclusive, but I prefer to avoid it.
🌯 Because of @doenerguidesberlin I am tempted to try more Döners. They recently held a community voting, and the top 3 were: Hasir Kreuzberg, Rüyam Schöneberg and Eddy's Gemüsekebap Rudow. BUT be careful out there…
🤮 … Austria's health agency linked European salmonella outbreaks to chicken kebab from Poland. (🇩🇪) 27 cases in Austria, with one death. Similar cases were reported in Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, UK, Ireland, Denmark, and Norway. Germany's RKI has registered 10 cases so far.
😔 Bad news: I hear a lot about layoffs, but nobody is announcing them anymore. If you know something, let us know! Klarna will outsource customer service staff, 250 employees affected (Sifted).
📉 I previously thought cannabis startups could be promising with the upcoming legalisation. But then I read this great piece from Cate that “80% of Germany's medical cannabis startups set to die a painful death.” Cantourage, one of them, reported a 90% sales increase in 1H 2023, earning €11M from medical cannabis.
⚽️ €713,58 or €73,17 monthly is the cost of streaming all Bayern Munich games this season. (🇩🇪) I’m not a Bayern fan, but I am pissed about how the leagues, UEFA and streaming services ruined football. And this will bite them in their asses down the road. Football needs to be accessible!
💬 Briefly:
Riders of Lieferando were on strike late last week. They demand (🇩🇪) at least €15/hour, 13th salary and additional pay for special occasions. RBB also had an excellent report on Uber drivers (🇩🇪) and the conditions they need to work in.
Christian Lindner, the finance minister, is proposing a reform for the tax treatment of employee stock options (🇩🇪). Better late than never?
According to Handelsblatt, Gorillas is struggling with paying its suppliers. On the other hand, Picnic, which teamed up with Edeka, is expanding and also coming to Berlin. “We learned a lot, but it was expensive.” —a made-up quote from an instant delivery founder or a VC
Payments group Adyen's shares plunged almost 40% last week after profits disappointed. Payments are a tough business!
Silicon Saxony? After Intel, TMSC is also planning to invest in a semiconductor factory in Dresden. They want state subsidies.
Enpal, Zolar and 1Komma5° are getting an Austrian competitor: Neoom (more, 🇩🇪).
Berlin's IT system integrator, syspro, acquires Graz-based RFID provider, Detego. The move enhances syspro's RFID solutions for top brands and retailers.
Startup-Verband reveals (🇩🇪) a near historic low in business climate amongst startups (1825 participating), at 38.1 points (-14.1 points compared to last year). Concerns arise from factors like inflation and rising interest. Also, this year there was no round above €250M; in 2022, there were four and in 2021, eight.
In July, we had a 23.8% increase in company insolvencies in Germany. (S. Bundesamt)
