Programming note: this was a week when police and others thought a wild boar was a lion... and that was funny. Anyways, I was still focused on promoting the survey and here is a fun fact:
Three days after publishing the report, I received as many visitors as I had since the site's launch. Now, that's amazing:
I will also be happy if you drop me a direct message on the topic:

🇩🇪 Berlin & Other good stuff
🚞 This is a beautiful explanation of the layers of our amazing Berlin public transport on Twitter. Reading it, I realised I never noticed trams only do the East. 😅
💦 Have you ever wondered how many drinking fountains are in Berlin? Me neither, but I can tell you it’s 222. You can find your closest one on this map.
🥵 We will need more of those because the heat waves will increase. Devastating.
🎯 Here is an interesting discussion on r/Berlin about software engineer salaries in Berlin. I have no hard proof, but based on my experience, I feel that the employers can still drive the narrative of “cheaper Berlin”, supported by kununu and Glassdoor data. Again, just a feeling, but I think data on these websites is manipulated downward to anchor the expectations. I had a similar experience, but I realised the reality was different after getting more involved in the scene. Good people will be expensive, and rightly so! Do not accept BS.
💰 Thinking of working for yourself instead? You can try with Berliner Startup Stipendium, which offers plenty of funding options.
📈 In 2022 and in terms of startup ecosystems Berlin moved up to #13 overall and #2 in Europe. We had five new unicorns, increasing the total count from 14 to 19, CoachHub being the highest valued at $1.5B.
📉 On the other hand, according to EY, in 2023 we have seen a 49% drop to €3.1B in investments in Germany YoY, due to fewer larger deals. Berlin startups secured 47% (over €1.4B) of VC, whereas sustainability-related startups received a record 30% of total investment.
🛂 The Henley Passport Index tells you how strong your passport is. German is second with Italian and Spanish (190 destinations with no visa). Slovenia 183, Iran 44, last place Afghanistan 27.
😎 Career-related: Someone asked how to remind people you are their boss. The advice, a comment, is worth saving. I particularly like “do not lead with questions” and the “three things EVERYBODY needs to be able to say: I don’t know, I made a mistake, I need help”. In fact, how many great bosses did you have? Even if you’d need to shovel shit, things are easier with a great boss!
💸 Do you like meetings? If you do, fair enough—I don’t. That’s why I like the solution implemented by Shopify, where employees see the cost of the meeting at the point of scheduling it. Is this meeting really necessary? In late March they also cancelled recurring meetings involving more than three people, Wednesdays were made meeting-free, resulting in around a third less time spent in meetings.
🧐 I liked this essay on angry, unf*ckable young men. Solid points that explain a lot.
😔 Bad news: nothing to report. (if you have info, let me know!)
r/berlin choice of the week: if your neighbours drop a shitload of stuff in front of your house when moving out, you can report it to Ordnungsamt here. They will pick it up.
💬 Briefly:

This is a footer 🎯 of the definition of where Balkan starts. I completely agree with Žižek here, “For Italians and Austrians, it begins with Slovenia, where the reign of the Slavic hordes starts. For Germans, Austria itself, on account of its historic connections, is already tainted by Balkanic corruption and inefficiency.” And so on and on. It depends who you ask.
