Programming note: We’re running the 4th cohort of GSD Sessions this week for €0, so if you want to try, drop your e-mail here. It’s simple: meet others on Google Meet at 6:30 AM and work until 8:00 AM on whatever you like (some people also join at 7:00 AM). It works exceptionally well because of accountability.

☕️ Coffee with Maja Voje
Maja is a friend I’ve only met online and the first Slovenian featured here. She’s a Go-to-Market expert with a recent best-seller on the topic. This is what she prepared for you:
Atomic Habits - one of the rare books that changed my life. Developing and stacking habits, building routines to get closer to long-term goals, and developing a mindset that "done is better than perfect" guided my writing journey and significantly contributed to the quality of my life, relationships, and well-being. Check out his newsletter, too.
Six hours of Mozart - for my writing flow and deep work. His music does something wonderful to human brains. I used to write for the whole length of the playlist.
Modern Wisdom Podcast - I believe that interdisciplinary knowledge is the best - knowing some psychology and neuroscience and learning about evolution and productivity presents a wonderful opportunity to get outside the box in our thinking and get a fresh perspective on some things we may take for granted. Since technology is evolving so fast, it’s great to keep up with social sciences and related areas.
🇩🇪 Berlin & Other good stuff
☝️ Here is another reminder for the 4th GSD cohort. You can join us tomorrow at 6:30 AM or any day in the following eight weekdays for FREE. Drop your e-mail here.
🤡 In Berlin, we had a 30 km/h speed limit on 34 main roads, introduced years ago to improve the air quality. Since the air got so much better, the speed limit will mostly be increased back to 50 km/h. Fascinating. (RBB, 🇩🇪) Related, the Senate decided there will be no higher parking fees for SUVs in Berlin as in Paris (they tripled the fees recently).
😅 I’ll stay with politics for another moment; I found this comment on an article about Lindner (finance minister) admitting that Germany is impoverished very fitting. The whole discussion is worth reading and matters. If you asked me, the debt brake was a mistake.
🎨 Exberliner made an excellent overview of the most important exhibitions in Berlin this year. I’ll meet you at Infinite Landscapes, Art Week and Berlin, Berlin!
The percentage of people riding BVG without a ticket in 2023 was around 5% (so if we are 20 in a train car or a bus, at least one of us is most probably without a valid ticket!). Around 540 people were ultimately imprisoned in 2023 because they hadn’t paid their fines. (more Instagram, 🇩🇪) The numbers of total controls are pretty random estimates (16.4M inspections and 1.05B passengers).
💰 Last week, I asked about Return-To-Office mandates (we had a good third of respondents with MORE mandatory office; for 2/3s it stayed the same). This time, we talk about overtime, where *accumulated means flex time, enabling you to take extra hours off.
✏️ Often, “X years of experience in Y” requirement in job descriptions is useless because the willingness to learn and the drive matter more. Here is an excellent piece of advice on How to hire low experience, high potential people by . A must-read and something for your archives.
💡 I’ve never followed Casey Neistat, the godfather of vlogging, but I was impressed by the interview he gave to DOAC (YouTube/Podcast)—a massive lesson on originality and patience. The first hour was especially strong and resonated strongly with me. (h/t Manoj!)
😳 Unbelievable data, but 16,000 children die daily (11 every minute)! But we’ve made so much progress; it’s the best time to be alive for most of us. “The world is awful. The world is much better. The world can be much better” is a great insight.
r/berlin choice of the week is the list of bad news for you if you don’t have or cannot get an Anmeldung by Nico. Careful with those “without Anmeldung” apartments out there.
💬 Briefly:
😔 Bad news: Miele -2000; Grammarly -230; Snap -10%; Amazon -400, Clue -50%.
Aviv Group will take over Berlin-based prop-tech Neuraum. Sono Motors' (EV, Munich) bankruptcy application was withdrawn after an investment.
By the end of March 1500 BVG buses and 381 trams will be equipped with WLAN.
Berlin has 3.7+M people and 130k dogs registered. This is a significant Coronavirus-related increase from 2019 (111k). (RBB, 🇩🇪) Pick up the 💩, ok?
What if I told you there is an app with 236M paying users but is still losing money? Proven by Spotify!
Apple apparently acquired the most (32) AI startups in 2023.
Management of Deutsche Bahn won’t receive any bonus for 2023, but will still receive bonuses for 2023 from €736k and up to €1,26M. Nice. (BZ, 🇩🇪)
Uber, which recently paid for naming rights for half of Berlin, reported its first annual net profit since going public in 2019.
💸 Recently funded in Berlin & Germany
Framen | Berlin | AdTech for digital billboards | €10M+ | Careers.
Dude Chem | Berlin | Green chemical manufacturing | €6.5M | No careers.
Daedalus | Karlsruhe & San Francisco | Autonomous factories with AI-driven robots | $21M | Careers.
Neocom | Munich | AI-powered product advisor for online shopping | $4.5M | Careers.
Kauz | Düsseldorf | Chatbots and AI assistants | €2.3M | Careers.
😅 Meanwhile
Vision Pro was all over social media. At first, I was, “Wow, look at these two jerks,” but then I started to think that we are all the same, but instead of Vision Pro we look at our phones (ok, most hopefully not while eating with someone). Vision Pro is just a new type of screen that makes it more obvious we have turned into a fucking screen society.
This is a footer slice of 🍺 consumption stat: “Beer consumption in Germany has been declining steeply for the last thirty years.” From a bit below 120 million hectoliters in 1993 to 83,7 million today (Tweet).
