If you find value in my work, I would love you to become a supporter. Consider it as an investment in your future (and you can also deduct it from your taxes, but this is no tax advice). 😊
🙏 It is the minimum the Substack platform allows: €5.00 per month and €30.00 per year. If I assume 15 inspiration snippets per issue, this means a bit more than 3 cents per snippet.

I’ve noticed some readers like to share parts of the snippets. I would love it if you can also name handpicked as a source. This is possible on twitter (@handpickedBln) or LinkedIn (@handpicked for Berlin).
🇩🇪 Berlin & Other good stuff
👥 On the last day of 2022, Berlin had 3.75M registered inhabitants, a 2.1% y-o-y growth. (Amt für Bevölkerungsstatistik)
🚌 You now know that BVG’s buses installed the dark mode on their screens also during the day: white screens were disturbing the drivers.
💾 Great news for Magdeburg! Intel will invest over €30B into a fab, making it the largest foreign investment in Germany. The government will support with subsidies of €10B. Careers.
💰 Let’s tax the AI? (🇩🇪) I am not so sure, Ampel-Koalition without FDP! The proposal aims to offset public investment and social security losses but faces strong resistance. I support regulation, but I mean, how are you even going to measure and implement it?
↘️ German house prices fell by a record 6.8% in Q1 2023. It seems to be a buyer’s market. The cost of refinancing will also increase, which might be painful for many overly ambitious investors/buyers in times of low-interest rates.
🇨🇳 I previously mentioned China, cars and German arrogance, but this chart of China’s global export of finished cars is something I wish handpicked subscriber numbers would be. Are the good times for German producers over? The exports to China fell by 26% in Q1 y-o-y. The auto industry, accounting for 20% of total German exports to China last year, contributed to a 44% decline in overall exports this year. More here (🇩🇪).
🚾 Slightly paraphrasing this mind-blowing fact: In 1968, 12% of all apartments in West Berlin didn’t have their own toilet. In 1997, 17% of apartments in former East Germany (incl. East Berlin) still had no indoor toilet or bathroom.
📈 How does Berlin rate on the Global liveability index 2023? No idea, because they want $810 for a complete dataset, but I can tell you Vienna is #1, “owing to its winning combination of stability, good culture and entertainment, reliable infrastructure, and exemplary education and health services.” Elsewhere in Europe: #2 Copenhagen, #6 Zurich and #7 Geneva. Last place: Damascus (#173).
🪦 RIP Oda! A Norwegian grocery delivery company with big plans in Germany is leaving with 30.6. In February this year (Issue#40), they still hoped for €250M in revenues. I never ordered, and groceries really are a graveyard of ambition.
Same-day (or last-mile) delivery service DODO, originally from the Czech Republic, has announced its expansion to Germany after already being active in Berlin and Munich.
😔 Bad news: Wandelbot (Dresden, 50%); Alex Springer, publisher of Bild, is planning to replace up to 30% of employees with AI (or just cut projects and call it AI replacement?).
📉 Siemens Energy's shares dropped 35% (🇩🇪) last week due to billion-dollar issues at wind power subsidiary Gamesa; I previously posted jobs at the company and am not sure how long can the general sustainability hype sustain itself (1KOMMA5° , see funding section, also a unicorn after 23 months of existence, 🇩🇪).
🥊 Mark Zuckerberg is ready to fight Elon Musk in a cage; I would pay to see it and would bet a house on Zuck. It’s all because Musk is nervous because Meta is building a Twitter alternative—here are some insider info on the project. Related: Last week I failed to get my Twitter ad working, and of course, nobody was there to help. Reddit, on the other hand, organised a call with me.
🤷🏻♂️ Of course. We knew it, but TikTok finally admitted that some user data is stored in China. It is the creator’s data, but some people in the US government are pissed. More on Forbes.
🤓 Something different from Reddit this time: life hacks that saved you money, time, or made your day-to-day activities easier? If you look close enough, you will find some of them in your life. I almost always take the stairs.
🥣 Are you looking for a restaurant to celebrate your new promotion, birthday, severance pay or a job? Try "Hallmann und Klee" in Berlin-Neukölln. The owner Sarah Hallmann just got awarded the title of “Restaurateur of the Year” from Gault&Millau. A seven-course menu costs €95, with an additional €65 for a beverage pairing. If this is too pricey, there are plenty of alternatives, for example, Falafel in berlin.de or Buya Ramen Factory (if a soup is worth north of 13€ is a question for another time). I can also warmly recommend Berta, and you should ask to sit at the kitchen/bar.

This is a footer 🤯 fact for you: “Pakistan is an acronym, for Punjab, Afghan (the North-West frontier region), Kashmir, Indus (some say it's for Islam) and Sind. The "Tan" is said to represent Baluchistan.*” Source.
*After publishing, I received a correction/additional info from a reader that said: “Tan in Farsi when it comes at the end, means a place of what comes before it. So Pakistan is the place of Pakis. Tajikistan is the place of Tajiks etc.”
