🇩🇪 Berlin & Other good stuff
🔒 I published the best of July with extras for supporters and all the funding rounds.
🤝 If you are into Döner’s, look no further, this is THE Instagram account for you (🇩🇪). I would prefer a website with a search function, but these guys know what they are doing. You can at least navigate with the highlights.
👥 At the end of 2022 we were 3.755M in Berlin. Out of these, 834k (22,2%) were non-German. Of these, 243k (29,2%) came from the EU. The second highest % is in Bremen (21%), followed by Hamburg (19,2) and Baden-Württemberg (17,8%). (Destatis)
🚌 Another fact: 99,4% of Berliners live a maximum of 600m (Bus) or 1200m (Train) distance from a public transport station with a minimum of 28 departures per day.
🚙🚗 This is in German, but someone was blocked by someone’s car, and a Reddit user had some, hmm, detailed advice. In sum, you could: 1. Call the Ordnungsamt for the wrongly parked car. 2. Report potential damage to the other's insurance or even file a complaint for coercion by deliberate parking.
🚀 Apparently, scientists discovered a new superconductor, LK99. It conducts electricity without loss, promising major boosts in power efficiency, faster computers, better MRIs, and even futuristic transportation. This a huge step for tech and a great opportunity for VCs to pivot from AI!
😶 Jake Seliger, a blogger I like to read, is dying of cancer and his wife wrote a powerful essay about “What it’s like to be married to a dying man”. And it is “it’s like gaining enormous, terrifying clarity. The moment when you realize the right path, the yes or no answer, the end of the debate. Clarity might sound great— don’t we all want clarity? But clarity is cruel, too.” Clarity, indeed, is cruel.
🎪 tipBerlin has a list of 12 “hidden” treasures of Berlin that tourists usually miss. Starting with Checkpoint Char…. just kidding. Märkisches Viertel, Britzer Garten, Uferstudios and the likes.
💸 Berlin's July 2023 inflation rate reached 6.1% compared to July 2022, with a 0.2% rise from May 2023. Despite a 35% drop in heating oil prices, energy costs rose 12.2% YoY. Food prices also remained high, increasing 9.9% YoY.
😔 Bad news: Yves Rocher is closing all stores in Germany; Urbanara & The Plant Box (both Berlin) are insolvent; insovent Knister (barbecue stuff, Munich) was taken over by Babossa.
Career advice: A small study, but still: Back-to-back meetings cause stress build-up and reduce engagement and taking short breaks between meetings decreases stress, boosts performance and helps maintain focus. Try 25-min meetings for a positive impact, but of course, you need to then engage in an even more focused way.
r/berlin choice of the week is this story about Flixtrain. I had a “never-again” experience myself back in December, so I can relate. Flix is clearly investing more in growth than operations.
🚲 Do you still pedal? E-bikes adoption is accelerating in Germany, with nearly half of the 4.6M bicycles sold last year being electric. For the first time, e-bikes could surpass unmotorized bike sales this year! More at RBB. (🇩🇪)
